Late summer sunsets on Cape Cod have my heart. The color of the beach grass, the way the sun hits the sand, and the slightly earlier sunsets make for some of my favorite family sessions.


This family session took place on a perfect late-summer evening during golden hour. The weather truly could not have been more perfect, which you really never know what you are going to get here in New England. It felt like something out of a Taylor Swift album as the seagulls flew around behind us in the sunset glow. Three-year-old boys are known for their wild energy, and this little one did not disappoint. From the moment his feet hit the sand, he was off — running, jumping, digging, chasing gulls, and occasionally sprinting toward the water with wild joy. His energy was infectious, and rather than try to contain it, we leaned in. Some of the best shots came from letting him be exactly who he is — joyful, curious, and totally free.


Meanwhile, his baby sister was the picture of calm. She had just mastered walking and was showing off her new standing and baby waddle down to the ocean. She loved giving mama snuggles and showing off that sweet little baby grin for the camera. The contrast between her sweet stillness and her brother’s full-speed adventure made for the most heartwarming photos — the kind that tell the story of a real family in this special season.


Mom and Dad were absolute champs chasing after their three-year-old, bribing with ice cream and leaning into the chaos. I always love to remind my parents that most family photography sessions with little ones are going to feel a bit chaotic. Toddlers are the opposite of stillness, and the more we lean into their chaotic, playful energy, the more real and relaxed our photos will be. Those fleeting, chaotic, love-filled moments are what make beach sessions like this so special. It’s not about the perfectly posed shot — it’s about the memory.


Cape Cod, sunset, and a little chaos — honestly, it doesn’t get better than that.
